Brazilian Philately: The Pan Am Zeppelin Flight of 1930

Dealer – Mrs. S. Rascher

This person, whether really a dealer – no reference was found googling, is responsible for four categories of covers. She seems to have had very close ties to Dewitz, seems most of her covers come with the Dewitz#s and the associated Gothic capital D on the back. She also received covers out of São Paulo via the dealer Sandvoss. Also the last seen, would assume someone in Recife was also involved.

Preprinted Covers

Rascher seems to have had access, like the majority of the German dealers, to the standard preprinted, yet personalized, stationary. Whereas

Dewitz's covers are 59A and 59B, Rascher seems to have made the 59D and 59E versions, the basis for a cooperation with European dealers. These covers come in two different flavors. A set out of Rio de Janeiro and another canceled in Recife.

Rio de Janeiro

Both types are canceled with the RdJ7ab device and the special sticker for this flight.

Recife

Here the cancels are the cachet/special canceler used for this flight only.

Cooperations

Besides the already mentioned intercambio with Dewitz in Germany, there are two further examples:

São Paulo

I've seen and own several of this type. The picture post cards were prepared by the Paulistano dealer Sandvoss, canceled with the characteristic São Paulo device that has the wavy defect at the left bottom. Also the sticker used was the ordinary Condor one. An example of such cards below. And they usually have both of the “Dewitz” characteristics, # and Gothic D.

Recife

Someone else created a type of patchwork cover of which I've seen several, usually at auctions being hyped. I consider these covers more a philatelic “spielerei” than anything else

Colorful but not very valuable. Note that these covers never carry the Dewitz#s.

Last Comment

Considering where all the Dewitz characteristics show up in the Rascher batch, seems to indicate that these numbers were applied post flight and not during their preparation. Still, the #s may have fulfilled the purpose of keeping what went to whom.
